Mrs. Deborah Sonder

Deborah Sonder is a middle school teacher at Dennis Lab School. She teaches Project Based Learning and 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. Mrs. Sonder was born in Decatur; she went to Johns Hill and MacArthur. She majored in History and Secondary Education at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and graduated in 2013 with endorsements in Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science. She has a Master’s in Educational Leadership from EIU and is currently completing her Master’s in History from EIU. She has been teaching in Decatur Public Schools since 2013 and has been at Dennis since 2016.

Mrs. Sonder loves teaching middle school because of their excitement and passion for learning and new experiences. She enjoys project-based learning where students have voice and choice and learn 21st century skills. In Language Arts, she uses small group instruction to differentiate learning for each student. It is her goal that every student leaves Dennis with a love of reading and writing. In Social Studies, Mrs. Sonder hopes to prepare students to be global citizens who will make a positive impact on their community and the world. Outside of teaching, she enjoys computer games, board games, and spending time with her husband, Matt, and her dog, Padfoot.
