Illinois High School Theater Festival

Over the course of the three days, students were able to attend many workshops, speak with colleges, and see shows at a professional level. When we arrived students were able to attend the opening ceremonies. It was honestly so incredible to see almost 4,000 high school students all in one place celebrating the art form that they love. On Friday and Saturday students attended a combination of six workshops ranging from improv classes to tap dancing classes (which will be put to use in this year’s show). Part of the experience was being able to see the All-State production. This year they presented the musical Big Fish and I am pleased to say that the seven students that attended were tentative during the production and showed upmost respect to those involved in the production. Friday night was reserved for social events for the students. They had the opportunity to network with others from across the state and meet new people in a relaxed environment.

This year’s theater festival theme was Transformation. That is truly what the arts does to people - transforms them. Whether it is into another world, into better people, or help transform them into success, the arts transforms. I fully believe that the Illinois High School Theater Festival helped transform these seven students into better individuals and performers.

Overall, this trip would not have been possible without the generous grant awarded to these seven students by the Decatur Public Schools Foundation
