• DPS will be offering parent sessions in the areas ELA and Math to help parents support their children in grades PreK-12th beginning May 4, 2020 .

    English Language Arts (ELA)

    The ELA parent sessions will be in the form of videos created by Dr. Jalani Jabari for DPS to provide parents with skills to encourage and support students learning at home.  These short videos will be posted each Monday on the DPS website, Twitter and Facebook, and distributed through school platforms as well. I will email the links on Mondays and schools can distribute to the parents in any way you usually communicate. Dr. Jabari will also be doing some Radio DPS read alouds and lessons.

    Jelani Jabari, Ph.D, is the founder and president of Pedagogical Solutions, LLC, an educational consulting firm that transforms classrooms into centers of excellence. Prior to this, he was a middle school administrator for three years and a teacher for 10 years in the Detroit Public Schools. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Evaluation and Research and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction.

    Describe a character, setting, or event in a story.

    Explain central idea(s) of text.

    May 18th           (2 hrs.)

    Write with a purpose: Informative (incl. drawing).

    Explain events, procedures, ideas, etc. in text explaining what happened and why.

    Explain how author develops point of view.

    May 25th           (2 hrs.)

    Write with a purpose: Narrative (incl. drawing).

    Quote accurately from text when explaining what text says explicitly.

    Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information.

    June 1st                (1 hr.)

    Use info. gained from words in print/text to demonstrate understanding of character, setting, or plot.

    Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from textual details.

    Write arguments that support claims w/ clear reasons and relevant evidence.

     

    Math with MyT Training

    The math parent sessions will be in the form of weekly Zoom sessions held Tuesdays at 2:00 starting next week and going through the middle of June. Parents can sign up for these sessions on the link posted on the DPS FaceBook page.  Parents will be asked to make a Zoon account on their own device (Zoom won’t work on DPS iPads). Students can join the session with their parents but no students will be allowed to join on their own.  However, the videos will be recorded and anyone who isn’t able to be a part of the live session will be able to watch the lesson, that will be posted on the DPS website, Twitter, Facebook, and distributed through school platforms as well

    The presenter is Sylus Green, he is the leader of 5:30 Scholars, out of Chicago.  The 5:30 Scholars’ mission is to provide educational opportunities to prepare students to be in the top 5% of their class and score a 30 on the ACT.
