South Shores Elementary School opened as a new school in August of 1957.  It was dedicated on May 2, 1958 as a "symbol of the real spirit of a community interested in good education for all of its children."  It is located on South Franklin Street between Holy Family Church and the South Shores Park.  The school was built to serve the growing neighborhood on the south side of Lake Decatur.  There were 446 students enrolled the 1958-1959 school year.  Currently, we have 360 students enrolled for the 2007-2008 school year.  South Shores has served Decatur families as a neighborhood elementary school for 50 years.  We now have 3rd and 4th generations of South Shores families attending our school.  Three teachers on our staff this year actually attended South Shores Elementary School.  They are proud to tell you stories of their South Shores school days.
