A: There are 3 lunch hours at SDMS. Lunch hours are 30 minutes long. The first lunch period (4A) begins at 11:38 a.m., the second (4B) lunch begins at 12:08 p.m., and the last lunch period (4C) begins at 12:38 p.m.
Q: What should a student do if he/she is absent from school?
A: A parent needs to call the school office before 10:00 a.m. on the day that a student is absent. The attendance line is: 217-362-3250. If this is not done, the school will attempt to call either home or work to find out why the student is not present. If no contact is made, a note which contains the student's name, date and reason for absence, and parent's signature will need to accompany student when he/she returns to school. Absence will be unexcused until a parent contacts the school.
Q: What is the tardy policy at SDMS?
A: A student is allowed 3 tardies to school. On the 4th through 7th tardy, the student will be assigned office detentions. For any tardy after the 7th time, a student will be suspended. If student has a medical appointment, please bring notification from the doctor's office. For tardies to class, students will be sent to the office with a referral on the 4th tardy to any class.
Q: How can I contact my child's teachers?
A: Parents can call the school's main phone number, 217-362-3250, and leave a message for any teacher. Meetings can be set up with a teacher or a team of teachers. All teachers' email addresses are included on this website. Parents may also contact one of the school's counselors.
Q: Does SDMS have a dress code?
A: Yes, we do and it is expected that all students will follow it. It is felt that short shorts (less than a 4" inseam), halters, midriffs, spaghetti straps, tank shirts, fishnet shirts, and pants/jeans with holes are inappropriate for school. Shirts/blouses should be able to be tucked in, overalls will need to have straps buttoned, and pants need to be worn at the waist . . . NO SAGGING! Students cannot wear any sort of headgear (hats, sweatbands, bandannas, etc.) or sunglasses. Clothing with suggestive messages, profanity, or drug/alcohol-related decorations is not permitted. Students may be sent home to change any clothing that doesn't follow the dress code.
