Hello, my name is Heather Groves and this is my ninth year teaching at William Harris Elementary School. My first year at Harris I taught 4th grade. I have been in my 1st grade classroom the past eight years. I am very happy to be working at such a great school with wonderful staff and students.
I was born in Rockford Il but grew up in Decatur. I am a Decatur Public School graduate. I recieved my Associates Degree at Richland Community College and my Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Illinos University. After graduation I was a substitute teacher for Decatur Public Schools until I was employed by Harris. Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a husband that works at Muller and two children that attend Dennis Lab School.
As a teacher, I love the challenge of building success for each individual learner. I am constantly learning and open to new insights from educational research and my wise teaching colleagues. I believe that all children can and will learn. Children learn through many different learning styles, and it is important to me that I teach using many different methods to reach all children. I also feel it is important for the parents to be involved in their child's learning. Daily books are sent home so that students and parents can read together. I also send home weekly newsletters so you know the standards we are working on each week. Parent-teacher-student conferences are practices that I use to involve and inform parents. Parents are one of the most important resources in meeting the individual needs of each student.
