    Absence Notification

A student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) must: (1) upon their child’s enrollment, provide telephone numbers to the Building Principal and update them as necessary, and (2) authorize all absences and notify the school in advance or at the time of the child’s absence.

If a student is absent without prior authorization by the parent(s)/guardian(s), the attendance secretary shall make reasonable effort to notify the parent(s)/guardian(s) of their child’s absence.

The school depends upon the parent to have the child at school punctually and regularly except for reasons of illness.

Send a note to the teacher upon his/her return confirming the date(s) and reason for the absence. If no contact is made by parent or school, a note will be required to excuse the absence.

The State of Illinois has clarified attendance procedures for all schools. Students arriving 10-15 minutes after start time are considered Tardy.  At 16 minutes past start time, they are late and unexcused. We appreciate you for scheduling doctor/dentist appointments and other necessary procedures to help comply, as our state aid is based on daily attendance counts.

Decatur Public School District #61 Tardy Policy

The Decatur Public Schools do not penalize students who come late to school occasionally for reasons recognized by the State of Illinois as valid causes for missing school. However, the district and the state consider a student who arrives late without valid cause, unexcused. Intentional tardiness is considered truancy. In cases where students are late, the district will not penalize students if their parents/guardians call the school before the end of that school day. If the tardiness becomes habitual, building administrators or designee will meet with parents/guardians to determine the cause and then begin interventions to assist the child and/or family. Tardies ultimately equal unexcused absences from 10 school. Once a student reaches 3 or more unexcused absences, the parent/guardian will be sent a letter regarding truancy. A copy of that letter will also be sent to Regional Office of Education. Tardy counts start over at the beginning of each quarter.
