Dr. Danielle Lusby

Dr. Danielle Lusby is the Director of Student Services for Decatur Public Schools. Dr. Lusby and the Student Services staff provide assistance to parents and/or guardians with registration, attendance, dropout prevention, truancy, homelessness, and student wellness.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Leadership and Oversight of Student Services staff including Health Services (School Nurses) Staff: Direct supervisor of Coordinator of Health Services who manages all student-related services and support not directly tied to academic instruction for the district.

    Manage Alternative Educational Placements: Assigned a suitable learning environment for students struggling in traditional settings into a smaller, structured environment to rebuild school-readiness skills.  Options include: 

    • Decatur Alternative Education (located at SDMS).
    • Milligan Academy (ROE) for students in grades 6-12, includes expelled students.
    • Futures Program for at risk 11th &12th graders (16+) non-expelled students to prevent dropout.
    • Option 3 Program provides a credit recovery opportunity for expelled students aiming to graduate.
    • Acellus Online Platform for online instruction for students with expulsion stays, severe anxiety, or medical needs impacting attendance.

    Support Behavior Intervention Programs: Supervise building-based Behavior Interventionists (16 in total) and ensure this staff is trained in trauma-informed care, de-escalation, and crisis prevention. Document intervention meetings with tier II and III students in Skyward to track student behavior.

    Supervise Truancy Intervention Programs (TAOEP): Oversee staff directly involved with the student population with chronic absenteeism and truancy. Release parent notification letters and assist with truancy review boards to provide wrap around services for families. When appropriate, involve Everyday Labs (organization) specializing in closing truancy gaps. 

    Liaison for Care and Transition Rooms: Work with DFTA leadership, school teaching assistants, and school administration to ensure proper implementation and training of de-escalation practices, trauma response, and CPI, used in school care rooms and transition rooms. 

    Oversee Ripple Effects Program: Ensure all teaching assistants have access to this online system to coordinate student assignments in the platform based on behavior infractions. Monitor integration of character education tools to support behavioral reflection and improvement. 

    Update the Student Code of Conduct and Parent Handbook: Lead annual revisions of the manual with input from administrators, staff, and legal to ensure compliance with policies.
