The Director of Buildings and Grounds for Decatur Public Schools is responsible for the oversight and management of the custodial, maintenance, and warehouse/transportation staff. The director works alongside the administration and the Board of Education to maintain and improve facilities to meet the academic needs of DPS students and staff. 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Maintenance and Custodial Operations
    Oversee daily operations of 40 maintenance staff and 80 custodians through direct supervision and three maintenance foreman.

    Lead Departmental Supervisors
    Manage and support four departmental supervisors to ensure efficient and effective building operations.

    Develop Project Bid Specifications
    Collaborate with architects and the Coordinator of Purchasing to create detailed bid specifications for contracted work.

    Oversee Construction Projects
    Act as or oversee the construction manager for all district building and renovation projects.

    Review Life Safety Compliance
    Monitor the status of Life Safety work and ensure all requirements are addressed and up to code.

    Coordinate Required Facility Inspections
    Schedule and manage inspections from the Regional Office of Education and other regulatory bodies for life safety, workers’ compensation, general liability, and boiler systems.

    Ensure Compliance and Follow-Up
    Initiate and supervise corrective actions based on inspection findings to maintain safety and compliance standards.

    Manage Driver’s Education Fleet
    Oversee the maintenance, operation, and safety of the district’s Driver’s Education vehicle fleet.
